Well I thought we had avoided it, dodged the bullet, I thought we were gonna get off scot- free or puke free this cold and flu season but I was wrong, so VERY VERY wrong!
About mid-afternoon yesterday, my Kaylee girl started complaining about her tummy hurting. She didn’t feel sick, it just hurt she explained. So she ate her lunch and played in her room while I did some laundry. Then we were both heading downstairs to play a bit before it was time to get brother from school. She went downstairs before me and I heard her calling out for “mom” and “dad” after a couple minutes but she didn’t sound upset or that she needed us so I wasn’t rushing to get down the stairs. When I got to the bottom of our stairs she was sitting in a HUGE pile of throw up. She tried to make it to the bathroom (and only got to the door right outside it) and then once she threw up she tried to come get me and then fell in it. My poor girl!! It took a while to get her extracted from the mess, then to get her cleaned up (THANK GOD my hubby was working from home- he took her up to the bath) and then I got to clean the throw up off the floor, door, walls and myself by the time I was done. So NOT fun!
And then my poor girl continued to throw up every half hour and couldn’t even hold down water. She finally stopped right about bed time and slept through until about 2am. And then she and I were both up and down (no more throwing up, but now a headache) until 4 when we just decided to give up the pretense of sleep and watch some movies! My poor hubby is usually getting up at 4:30 (yes, AM) but he gave up at 4 too and just went in even earlier! So it is 9:30 here but I feel like it should be well past noon since we are already 5 hours into our day! But on the bright side, Kaylee is NOT throwing up at the moment and no one else in the house has it. (And I am PRAYING that no one else gets it, my poor friend Karla has had it hit EVERYONE in her family this week.) I hate throw up!
And at this point, you are wondering why in the world this post is titled , “Dollar Store Vase Makeover” when all you have heard about is puke! Sorry folks, I do apologize for that! But I am a mom and this is what is happening in my 0h-so-cool and Oh-so-thrilling life today! And since you are my faithful bloggy friends, you of course, get a front seat pass to the glamour of my life! And even with all the puke, I wouldn’t give it up!
And since we are home today, resting up and watching Tangled for the MILLIONTH time (I know the songs by heart!), I am also able to spend some time blogging, some time crafting and some time cleaning while nursing my baby girl.
And these vases are the perfect craft to do on a day like today!
I found the inspiration for my first set of vases from…wait…can you guess? I don’t think you’ll EVER guess where I found them? Who am I kidding you all know EXACTLY where I found them… PINTEREST!!! I loved the color and the simplicity!!
And SO EASY to do!! I did end up getting the wrong type of paint though. It didn’t really make a big difference in the project except that they took WAY longer to dry and the inside is not that GREAT looking but who is looking at the inside right? (Click HERE to go right to Sugar and Charm blog for directions!)
And I definitely suggest, going to the original site for info! I forgot to include the conditioner that you’ll need in this picture! But I did put it on and I was able to find it at Jo-Ann’s.
My dollar store vases! They had a lot of variety. I chose larger vases too so my hands would fit in to paint.
And here they are all done. I displayed them with my winter décor before I switched to Valentines!
Then my friend and fellow church office worker, Dawn, hinted around that she was looking for a cute and fun pencil holder for her new office. Since I had made a different one for my desk at the office, (see pic below and post here) I knew I could whip something up and my inspiration came from our own website this time, from Jenny’s valentine décor post here.
This is my pencil holder I made WAY back in the beginning of our blog, all 5 months ago! And here is what I did for Dawn:
As per Jenny’s post, all I needed was the vase (which was to become the pen holder), the floor cleaner, and glitter. And you’ll see at the end that I added a cup and ribbon that I already had on hand. The most expensive item was the floor cleaner.
I added the cleaner, swirled it to coat, drained the excess, sprinkled in enough glitter to cover and then dumped glitter back out. That easy peasy lemon squeezy (as my kids would say!). And this was the result!
Now this is just glitter poured into a vase with some cleaner to help it stay attached but sliding pens in and out will just eat away at the glitter and cause a mess so I came up with a rather GENIUS solution! Add a clear cup! And a ribbon to make it pretty! (the office is blue and black by the way!)
And there you go! Sparkly and pretty and yet practical!
And the next thing I want to try with dollar store vases is this! (OF COURSE I found it on Pinterest!
I hope you and yours are fairing well and are managing to avoid this YUCKY bug!!!
