Smoothies–Prepare Fruit and freeze!

My kids LOVE smoothies.

Well, I’m working on my four year old, but my girls LOVE them.

My nine year old is always asking if she can make them herself. She usually asks in the morning when we are trying to get out the door for school. The thought of trying to get everything out and cut up usually ends up with me telling her no. Sad, I know.

I’ve seen ideas on pinterest to cut up fruit ahead of time. So, I decided to spend a half an hour cutting up some fruit and putting them into freezer bags to have whenever we’d like. 

We’ve had them EVERYDAY since I’ve done that!

I have no special recipe, so I will just tell you what I do.

I realize that you can buy bags of frozen fruit and do the same thing, but there are only certain fruits I like frozen from the store. The two fruits I bought frozen this time were blueberries and raspberries. Then I cut up some fresh strawberries and bananas. I put them all in bowls to make it easier to add to the bags.

Then I added fruit to the freezer bags. I didn’t really measure, although I did have a lot of blueberries, so I do know I put in about 1 1/2 cups into each bag. You can never have too many blueberries right?

Then I added the rest of the fruit until it was gone. The strawberries and raspberries went quickly, so I made a bag of just bananas & blueberries. Like I said, no rhyme or reason.

I thought about adding a date on the bags, but really there is no reason as they will not last long in our house.

Make Ahead Smoothies

So, you want to know how I make my smoothies?

It’s really fancy!

-No, it’s really not.-

1. I add a handful of ice and put it on the bottom of the blender.

2. Then I add the bag of prepared fruit.

*Tip-If you just have an ok blender like me, then I suggest you take your bag of fruit out of the freezer the night before and put it in the fridge. This will help make it blend it easier as it won’t be a frozen chunk.

3. I put in one or two flavored yogurts. My kids like blueberry best.

4. Sometimes I add a little milk or water if it’s too thick. You could also add orange juice or apple juice.

5. I like to add either vanilla extract, honey or agave if it needs to be a little bit sweeter. 

Now for the fun part…the sneaky ingredients.

6. I add a large handful of baby spinach. It blends so well that the kids have no idea! You could also add other veggies like zucchini, carrots etc.

Other sneaky ingredients you can add to your smoothies…

-Flaxseeds

-Protein Powder

-Fish Oil

-Cacao Nibs

-Nut Butters (peanut, almond, cashew)

Whether you use my ‘no rhyme or reason’ smoothie recipe, or an actual recipe above, I would encourage you to at least prepare your fruit ahead of time. It makes it so easy to make a quick smoothie for yourself and your kids. 

Just think about how good you will feel knowing that your kids are getting a good serving of their fruits and veggies! I’m getting even more excited for my garden now. I will be throwing lots of sneaky things in them this summer.
